Korean War veterans and Korean Americans will dedicate Carson City's Korean War Memorial Monument on Saturday morning.

The No. 305 Carson City chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association and the Korean American Association of Reno have worked since 2005 to build the memorial at Korean War Veterans Memorial Park.

The ceremony will include dancing and rifle presentations and music by the Carson City Community Band. Gov. Jim Gibbons, Mayor Bob Crowell and South Korean Consul General Jaesoo Kim are scheduled to speak at the ceremony.

Donations and commemorative bricks sales by veterans funded construction of the memorial.

The memorial is made up of four boulders and two pedestals. The boulders represent the last four major battles of the Korean War in 1953.

One pedestal lists the names of the 34 Nevadans killed in the war. A rifle with a steel helmet, a symbol used as a grave marker, is mounted on top of the pedestal.

The other pedestal holds a replica of a typical early 1950s Korean house. The replica was made in South Korea.
