373 to graduate from Western Nevada College

For 373 Western Nevada College students, the hours of studying, the many tests and years of classes will pay off in associate degrees and certificates of achievement to be awarded next week.

The 2009 commencement ceremonies are scheduled Monday, May 18, in Fallon and Tuesday, May 19, in Carson City. This year, WNC will present its first Bachelor of Technology degrees in Construction Management to three men who will have the distinction of earning Western's first four-year degrees.

The Fallon ceremony begins at 7 p.m. at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 Park St. The Carson City commencement starts at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William St. Graduates are asked to check in by 6 p.m.

A Nursing Pinning Ceremony is scheduled for 46 associate degree nursing program graduates at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, at the Carson City Community Center. Speakers will include WNC President Carol Lucey, Nursing and Allied Health Director Judith Cordia and U.S. Army health care recruiter S. Sgt. Daryl Morris.

WNC graduates range from teens to grandparents, singles to moms and dads, and first-time job seekers to career professionals. Many graduates plan to transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno, to work toward a bachelor's degree.

Holly O'Toole, WNC instructor of biological sciences, will give the commencement address in Fallon, while Chad McCully, community college professor of English, will offer the address in Carson City.

Honorary associate degrees will be awarded to WNC Foundation Board Chair Roger Williams and Howard Rosenberg, former member of the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents. Williams is managing partner of Freeman & Williams LLP, CPAs in Carson City, and a founding board member. Rosenberg has made many contributions to the college during his tenure on the Board of Regents.
