A beginning computer course on spreadsheets will meet on Saturday afternoons, Nov. 21 and Dec. 5, from 1-5 p.m. Classes will be taught in English with a Spanish translator available. English skills are recommended for the courses.
Computer Applications 103B, C03, "Introduction to Spreadsheets," provides students with the information and computing exercises to create formulas, edit and print professional-looking spreadsheets. Film series travels
to Mozambique
WNC's Global Lens international film series offers a tale of Mozambique's civil war in "Sleepwalking Land," set to show at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at Marlette Hall, Cedar Building. The film tells the fascinating and sometimes macabre story of Muidinga, a refugee boy separated from his mother, who wanders the countryside with an elderly storyteller, and the only guide to finding his mother is a dead man's diary. Admission: $3.
Spring class schedule online
It's time to start planning for spring semester at WNC. The college's online class schedule will be available this week at www.wnc.edu. Online registration begins Monday, Nov. 30, for returning students, and Monday, Dec. 7, for new students.
A printed version of the class schedule will be mailed to all household addresses in the college's seven county service area during the first week of December. Classes begin Monday, Jan. 25.
Western is seeing substantial enrollment growth both in full-time and and part-time students. The biggest increase this fall was seen in full-time, degree-seeking students - a 38 percent increase. Students are urged to enroll early to make sure they get into the classes they need.
Enrolling at Western is as easy as going to the wnc.edu web page and clicking on the "Apply Now" icon. There is a "New Student Checklist" that guides students through taking placement tests, meeting with a counselor, attending an orientation and applying for financial assistance.
Nursing grads excel in licensing exam
Western Nevada College's 2009 nursing graduates were nearly perfect in their pass rate on the national licensure exam this fall.
The associate degree nursing program is reporting a 96 percent first time pass rate, with 45 of 47 students passing the examination on the first try. It was the second highest pass rate in the state, behind only Great Basin College which saw all 10 graduates succeed.
Dr. Judith Cordia, Director of Nursing and Allied Health, said the nursing graduates "are to be commended for their dedication to the pursuit of excellence. This stellar pass rate shows that our students have the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to protect the lives of patients. The entire college community is proud of their accomplishments."
WNC performed higher than national average rankings for both associate degree and baccalaureate degree nursing programs, according to statistics released by the National Council for State Boards of Nursing.
