Sarah Winnemucca: The San Francisco papers are gushing over the lecture of Sarah Winnemucca. The reporters speak of the "delicate sarcasm" and "glowing imagery."

Thanksgiving: The people of this State have about as many reasons for being thankful as any other state in the Union - The Mint is coining. The croakers are talking things down, but the croakers do not run Nevada any more. We have irrigation schemes afoot, our mines are yielding well and our agricultural industry is holding its own. The Appeal is glad to announce that the poor of this city have been amply provided for.

70 YEARS AGO

How Lake Tahoe got its name: Mark Twain, in "Innocents Abroad," comments unfavorably on the name of Lake Tahoe, asserting the name means "grasshopper soup." Suggested names were proposed such as Washington, Lincoln, then war president, Fremont and other historic names. Dr. DeGroot, writer of the Evening Bulletin, was asked if he knew what the Indians called the lake. "He drew a memorandum from his pocket and read over a list of Indian names ... and exclaimed, "Here it is; they call it Tahoe, meaning big water, or high water, or water in a high place."
