130 YEARS AGO

By some hook or crook a tame sheep belonging to J. M. Benton got on an awning in front of Kitzmeyer's establishment. His bleating drew a crowd to the opposite sidewalk to see what the docile brute would do to get out of his scrape. Every once in a while he would creep to the edge and make a motion like he wanted to jump, but didn't. In a fit of desperation, the sheep decided to jump, but was saved by a boy who caught him in the nick of time by the hoof. Then, all at once, a cheer went up from across the street.

100 YEARS AGO

The roads between here and Reno are in the worse shape they've ever been. One section in Ormsby County is plowed up, being repaired and is next to impassible. From Lakeview west to the lake north, the road is almost closed to wagons as far as Washoe City. On the east with the recent rains, the road is badly cut up with gullies and holes. It is impossible to get a Carson City auto driver to go to Reno for less than $50.

70 YEARS AGO

Judge Clark J. Guild, at a meeting of the local Lion's den, is confident the state will secure the mint building to be used as a museum. "I am going to fight for the museum as long as there is breath in my carcass," said Guild.

50 years ago

The pony express trail route has been straightened out after confusion regarding a portion of the trail going east 100 miles from Dayton. Confusion mounted when some stations, thought to be pony express stops, were found to be stage stops. The first stop is Reed's, followed by Fort Churchill and Coat Wells. Fort Finney at Carson Sink is next, followed by Houton Wells.

20 YEARS AGO

The high-level waste repository proposed for Nevada's Yucca Mountain could cost more and take longer to build than estimated, according to a high-ranking U.S. Energy Department official.

10 YEARS AGO

Several state agencies and the news media got a first look at the Department of Motor Vehicle & Public Safety's Training Division on Snyder Avenue. The first class of 35 recruits will start the first 16-week course in the facility this month.
