You can tell a lot about a team by how it plays after a defeat.

Carson High's boys soccer team showed its resiliency, bouncing back from last weekend's loss to South Tahoe to knock off Bishop Manogue 1-0 Wednesday night in a Sierra League match at Carson.

Carson improved to 6-1-1 and kept its hold on first place. The win gave Carson a season sweep of the series against the Miners.

"That was a very hard-fought game," Carson coach Nate Brigham said. "It was 80 minutes of all-out soccer for both teams. That's probably the best game I've seen in the four years I've been here.

"The last time they were missing three starters, and that definitely had an impact on the game. It was the first league game, too."

Manogue certainly defended Carson better this time around. In fact, the Senators didn't get a shot on goal until the 20th minute. Brigham, however, said he wasn't bothered by that.

"We were passing the ball; possessing the ball," Brigham said. "We forced them to do a lot of running. It had an effect later in the game."

Izzy Lopez and Luis Camacho had good scoring opportunities in the first half, but were unable to convert. In fact, Camacho misfired over the crossbar from less than 10 yards away.

Carson finally broke the ice in the 35th minute when defender Nate Eng crossed the ball to Humberto Elizondo, who settled the ball and drilled it past the Manogue keeper Sean Bieker.

"He (Elizondo) brought it down with his chest. To be able to dip it behind the goalie was very impressive.

"Team give Nate (Eng) 30 yards of space. He's very dangerous with the cross."

Bishop Manogue had two good looks at the goal in the second half, but Pedro Chavez turned away both shots.

"He had to face two shots from 6 to 8 yards and he made very big saves to keep us in the game," Brigham said.

Camacho had another opportunity to score late in the second half, but missed again from close range.

Unofficially, Carson outshot Manogue 11-7.

The Senators improved to 6-1-1 in league with an easy win over the Miners.

Sam Hutchinson, Francisco Barrios and Danny Alonso scored a goal apiece for Carson, while Alex Avila and Carlos Nunez contributed assists. Jose Gonzalez and Charles Larkin shared time in goal for Carson.
