Career day for Carson golfers

MINDEN - Carson High's golf team played its best round of the season en route to a second-place finish at Genoa Lakes.

The Senators finished with a season-best 368, 44 strokes behind Bishop Manogue's 324. Damonte Ranch was third at 372. Carson finished second overall heading into the 36-hole 4A Regional which starts Monday at Eagle Valley.

Elayna Shine shot a career-low 89, Whitney Nash followed with a season-low 91 and Katie Cowperthwaite had a season-low 93. Katie Livermore finished with a 95 and Lindsay Burroughs had a 97.

"It was a great day," Carson coach Terry Gingell said. "A lot of great things happened out there. I'm proud of the girls."

The top two teams and the top five individuals not from either of the advancing teams qualify for the state tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY:

CARSON BOYS THIRD

FRESNO - Carson High's boys cross country team finished third in its division at the 31st annual Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park.

Carson's team was timed in 1:24.27, more than a full minute behind De La Salle, which won the event with a combined time of 1:23,18.

The girls, who were without top runners Katie McFarren and Yvonne Hollett because of college testing, finished 11th in their division.

Richard Shroy was fourth overall, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes 13 seconds. Nick Schlager was 15th in 16:27, Logan Phillipi was 30th in 16:57. Brent Moyle was 45th in 17:12 and David McMasters was 76th in 17:38.

"We took fourth at Stanford and third here," coach Pete Sinnott said. "We've had two or three boys that have been sick, but they're getting better. We're coming around at the right time of the year."

Amber Karnofel, who has been steadily improving, finished 20th in 20:33. Amanda Gordon was 38th in 21:06, Erika Sosa was 62nd in 21:40, Chelsea Gordon was 87th in 22:26 and Haleigh Ward was 92nd in 22:39.

Arroyo Grande won the girls race.

DOUGLAS DEF. DAMONTE

Edgar Gonzalez scored a hat trick to lead the Tigers to a 6-0 win over the Mustangs in a Sierra League match.

Douglas is 4-4-1 heading into Tuesday's match at Wooster.

Edgard Arceo, Cole Cline and Corbin Zumpft scored a goal apiece. Cline also had an assist.

Zumpft and Ivan Gonzalez shared time in goal, combining for three saves. Tyler Bankofier and Rafael Alves played well defensively in the midfield.

JV SOCCER:

CARSON DEF. WOOSTER

RENO - Sam Hutchinson scored the game's only goal, as the Senators avenged their only loss of the season with a 1-0 win over Wooster.

Christian Navarro, Michael Samii, Carlos Munoz and Nate King all played well defensively to help keeper Jose Gonzalez post the shutout.

The win gives Carson an overall record of 9-1-2, 7-1-1 in league.

JV FOOTBALL:

CARSON DEF. DAMONTE

RENO - Andrew Johnson scored three touchdowns to lead Carson's JV football squad to a 49-0 win over Damonte Ranch Friday night.

Alex Crathers gained 116 yards on the ground while quarterback Chance Quilling completed 13 of 18 for 153 yards and two scores. one each to Brock Pradere and Cole Dufresne.
