Golfers can register for Friday's Literacy for Life Golf Tournament at Thunder Canyon until Tuesday.

The tournament to benefit literacy in Northern Nevada will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. It will be a standard scramble format.

Nevada Appeal Publisher Niki Gladys said she's happy to see the community support the tournament.

"Our community has truly rallied around this important cause," she said. "And that makes sense. Improving literacy improves the quality of life here in Carson City."

Raffle prizes have been donated by Thunder Canyon, Northern Nevada Business Weekly, Silver Oak, Eagle Valley, Empire Ranch, Plumas Pines, Marriott Hotels, Red's Old 395, Lake Tahoe Cruise by Captain Jim, Adele's, Locals BBQ, Tahoe Ridge, State Farm Insurance, Benson's Feed & Tack, Joe's Design, Carson City Hand Car Wash, PGA, NV Energy, Atomic Stone, Moonbean Publishing, Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center and East to West Embroidery.

"We have some great raffle prizes including golf clubs, leather bags and golf bag watches, rounds of golf from more than six area golf courses, and gift certificates from around the area," said Lynette Cameron, Nevada Appeal marketing director.

Golfers can call 882-2111 or 720-5114 to register.

Prizes will be given for first, second and third place, as well as Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive and Last but not Least, the last-place prize.

There will be two hole-in-one prizes: A $10,000 cash prize sponsored by Northern Nevada Business Weekly and a vehicle sponsored by Monarch Direct.

"We're pretty excited about the success of the first Literacy for Life tournament as we hope to do this annually," Cameron said. "This will be a fun day."
