Western Nevada College's Latino Student Club is looking for those who can sing, dance, play an instrument or tell jokes for the second annual "Show Your Talent Contest" on Saturday, Nov. 7. Auditions are open to WNC students and the community at large.

Two audition dates are scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday in Cedar Building room 109; and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 in Marlette Hall. There is a $20 per couple entry fee for dance contestants; other talent entries are free. Dance entrants must bring their own music to the audition.

The show will be 5-9 p.m. Nov. 7 at Carson High School. Tickets are $4 for adults; $2 for students with WNC ID card and children younger than 12. Proceeds will provide scholarships to Latino students.

Western Nevada College continues its Friday night series of films that span the continents and portray the lives and struggles of people of different cultures. The festival shows "My Time Will Come" at 7 p.m. Friday.

In "My Time Will Come," directed by Victor Arregui from Ecuador, a predawn murder sets in motion a series of interlocking tragedies that eventually find their way to the city morgue's brooding Dr. Arturo Fernandez.

The serpentine tale is a dark but sympathetic portrait of one man's solitude set against a richly textured rendering of Quito, Ecuador's capital city.

All films are English close captioned. Cost is $3, and free to WNC students with college ID.

Designed to promote cultural awareness, the independent films have been screened and won awards at festivals around the globe. The series is supported by Nevada Humanities.

Dr. Pat Barker presents Prehistoric Sandals of the Great Basin at 7:30 p.m., today as part of the Nevada State Museum's Frances Humphrey lecture series. The museum has some amazing sandals in its collection, including a 10,000 year old sagebrush sandal currently on display in the Under One Sky exhibit.

"Sandals are fascinating to study," says Curator of Education, Deborah Stevenson. "Signs of wear such as a hole in the heel tell us that real people wore these sandals ... The human element is obvious and real."

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a Halloween costume dance Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center's Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Tim Renner will teach a lesson in West Coast swing Hot Social Patterns at 7 p.m. The social dance and costume contest is 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required.

Lesson are $7 members or $10 for nonmembers; the dance is $7 for swing club members and $10 for nonmembers. The Artisans' Cafe will open at 6 p.m. for drinks. For information, go to www.highsierraSDC.org or call 775-629-9369.
