Nursing faculty member earns honor

WNC faculty member and certified emergency nurse Kay Sedlak is being named to the Academy of Emergency Nursing in Des Plaines, Ill. Sedlak is one of eight individuals being honored this year. Sedlak is a 25-year member of the Emergency Nursing Association, and worked for several years in the Emergency Department of Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Sedlak is also the editor of the "CEN (Certified Emergency Nursing) Review Manual, 4th Edition," a two-year effort by 45 authors that provides written and online exams to prepare emergency nurses for the certification exam. WNC nursing instructor Michael Malay is one of the authors.

Mixture of media on display at galleries

Western's fall art exhibit brings together widely different media from three artists: Susan Kotler, Joe Winter and Jim McCormick. The exhibit shows in both the Main Gallery, College Gallery and the Atrium Gallery in the Bristlecone Building through Thursday, Nov. 19.

Joe Winter will offer a demonstration of his ceramic techniques from 5:30-8:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 in Aspen Building, Room 213. The galleries are open weekdays from

9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All exhibitions and related activities are free and open to the public.

Plan for emergencies with wilderness aid

Whether trekking the Sierra, hunting in the Ruby Mountains or river rafting on the Truckee, those planning to spend time in remote areas need to be prepared for medical emergencies when help is delayed.

The non-credit course, Wilderness First Aid, CMSV 143C will meet 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14-15, at WNC Carson City. Cost: $95. No first aid or medical experience is required to take the course.

Wilderness First Aid is a comprehensive course on how to react, respond and save a life in remote life-threatening situations. The 18-hour class, designed for trip leaders, camp counselors and outdoor enthusiasts, is pre-approved and meets requirements for the Boy Scouts of America, American Camping Association and the United States Forest Service. Students will earn a two-year American Health and Safety certification.

Ex-IGT director now controller at WNC

Former director of finance for International Game Technology, Chet Burton, is the new controller for Western Nevada College, succeeding Paul Richey, who retired.

Burton's career with IGT began in 2000 as a senior financial analyst, and he rose through the ranks to become national field operations manager, finance manager, and controller. Prior to IGT he was the supply officer and controller for the Fallon Naval Air Station and attained the rank of commander.

Burton holds a bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and a master's of business administration degree from University of Virginia, Darden Business School.
