STATELINE - Carson High's girls golf squad tied for third place in Tuesday's Sierra League Invitational at Edgewood Golf Club.

Manogue, the defending state champions, were far superior than their division foes, as four Miners scored 90 or better en route to a 339 team total. Damonte Ranch was second with 419 strokes and Galena and Carson tied for third at 422.

Whitney Nash led Carson with a 10-2, while Lindsay Burroughs and Elayna Shine shot 105. Katie Livermore 110, Katie Cowperthwaite 110 and Megan Justice 113 rounded out the Senators' scoring.

Douglas' Bethany Wurster was the medalist with a 75.

"Elayna and Lindsay are ready for a breakthrough, and Whitney is just playing stewady," Carson coach Terry Gingell said. "I'm pleased with Katie (Livermore). She's doing a good job. It's only her third tournament of the year. She's playing decent golf."

VB: WOOSTER 3, CARSON 2

RENO - Trailing 2-0, Carson won two straight games before dropping a 15-12 decision in the fifth set to Wooster Tuesday night.

Wooster won 25-21 and 25-14 in the first two games only to see Carson take the next two 25-13 and 25-21, setting the stage for the fifth-set heartbreaker.

The loss dropped Carson to 1-2 in league heading into Thursday's match against No. 1 Damonte Ranch, which swept Douglas on Tuesday.

"I don't think we burned the tank coming back (from 2-0)," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "The other team dug deeper and wanted it more unfortunately. They kept a lot of stuff in play."

Elysse Virden led Carson with 12 kils and three blocks. Jeanette Van Sickle added 10 kills and two blocks. Alexis Church contributed 14 digs, while Angela Augusta added five kills, three aces and 10 digs. Meagan Knuckles dished out 10 assists and Kendra Krupp was credited with 25.
