Wildcats register sweep

As expected, Western Nevada College's baseball team swept last-place Colorado Northwestern on Friday in a Scenic West Conference doubleheader.

The visiting Wildcats won the opener 7-2 and took the second game 14-1 in a game stopped after five innings. WNC improved to 12-6 in league, four games behind Southern Nevada which swept Salt Lake on Friday.

Western Nevada continues the four-game series today with an 11 a.m. doubleheader weather permitting. WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said the first game was delayed by more than two hours because of snow.

Jeremy Gendlek worked the first five innings of the opener, allowing one earned run. Kramer Champlin finished up, striking out three in two hitless innings of work.

Freshman Kyle Conwell snapped a 1-all tie with a three-run homer in the third. Brooks Klein went deep in the sixth, driving in two runs to complete the Wildcats' scoring.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats used two-run homers by Conwell, Klein and ex-Carson star Paul Cagle plus three RBIs by Kevin Taylor to grab an easy win.

David Carroll picked up the win, working the first three innings and allowing Colorado's only run. Riley Bevill worked the final two innings and struck out three batters.

WNC LOSES TWICE

Western Nevada College dropped a Scenic West doubleheader to Colorado Northwestern, 4-3 and 7-5, Friday afternoon.

The two losses dropped WNC to 3-23 in league, while Colorado Northwestern improved to 3-25.

In the opener, Elisa Dawson scattered 11 hits in the losing effort. Colorado scored three in the first and one in the second to take an early 4-1 lead. WNC closed to 4-3 with two in the fourth, but was unable to mount any more offense. Kelsie Fahr led WNC with three hits, a run and RBI, while Chrissy Lawton, Paige Savage and Alicia Merrell all had one hit.

In the second game, WNC led 5-1 after five innings, but Colorado scored four in the sixth to tie the game at 5 and won it in the seventh with a two-out, walk-off homer off Jennifer Watkins, who allowed eight hits.

Frances Estrada and Alex Arciniega each went 2-for-3, while Savage went 2-for-4. Alissa Rampa and Merrell each went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Fahr went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The team collide today at 11 a.m. weather permitting.
