About half dozen deer killed on rural NV highway

(AP) - About a half dozen mule deer were killed while trying to cross a busy highway in northeast Nevada where a wildlife overpass is being built.

A Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman says the animals were killed by vehicles two weeks ago during the spring migration.

Construction of the $1.8 million overpass began last year across U.S. 93 about 10 miles north of Wells, but work was halted through the winter. Officials say it should be completed this spring.

Fencing was installed to try to funnel the animals toward limited crossing sites.

That stretch of highway bisects a heavy migration area. Officials say in some years, anywhere from 50 to 100 deer have been killed trying to cross the road.

The overpass is funded by federal stimulus money.
