Key error helps Tigers win home opener

DETROIT (AP) - Jhonny Peralta bobbled Magglio Ordonez's grounder, and the third baseman's throwing error cleared the bases in a four-run fifth inning that lifted the Detroit Tigers over the Cleveland Indians 5-2 Friday in their home opener.

Rick Porcello (1-0) gave up two runs in five-plus innings, and Jose Valverde got his first save in two chances. David Huff (0-1) allowed four runs - just one earned - in six innings.

Travis Hafner's second-inning, solo homer put the Indians ahead, and Mike Redmond's RBI double in the fifth gave them a two-run lead.

The game drew 45,010, the most for a Comerica Park opener and the second-largest crowd in the ballpark's 11-year history.

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 6

BALTIMORE (AP) - Travis Snider hit a tying double off closer Michael Gonzalez (0-2) in the ninth inning and scored on Jose Bautista's sacrifice fly as Toronto rallied from a 6-5 deficit in Baltimore's home opener.

Alex Gonzalez homered for the Blue Jays, just 1-8 at Camden Yards last season.

Casey Janssen (2-0) pitched one inning, and Kevin Gregg got three straight outs for his first save. Gonzalez blew a save for the second time in three chances.

Miguel Tejada homered and had four RBIs for Baltimore, which trailed 3-0 in the first. Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts left after the first with an abdominal strain.

Rays 9, Yankees 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Carlos Pena and Willy Aybar hit two-run homers to back David Price (1-0), who allowed three runs and seven hits in a career-best 7 2-3 innings.

Jason Bartlett's two-run double capped a five-run fourth inning against Javier Vazquez (0-1), making his first appearance for the Yankees since New York's crushing loss to Boston in Game 7 of the 2004 AL championship series. Carl Crawford, Dioner Navarro and Ben Zobrist also drove in runs for the Rays.

Mark Teixeira went 0 for 4 and is 0 for 16, matching the longest hitless stretch to begin a season in his career.

Rangers 6, Mariners 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Colby Lewis (1-0) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, struck out three and walked four, sending Seattle to its fourth straight loss. The 30-year-old right-hander won in the major leagues for the first time since starting for the Rangers and beating Barry Zito at Oakland on April 7, 2004.

Nelson Cruz homered for the third time in four games,

Trailing 5-1, the Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Lewis struck out Jack Wilson and retired Ichiro Suzuki on a groundout. At 1-4 the Mariners are off to their worst opening since going 0-5 in 2004.

Royals 4, Red Sox 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Rick Ankiel homered and hit a broken-bat, two-run single off Daniel Bard in the eighth inning to lift the Royals over the struggling Boston Red Sox.

Ankiel followed Billy Butler's solo homer in the sixth with a solo shot on the next pitch, then jammed a two-out single over shortstop Marco Scutaro's head in the eighth.

Joakim Soria pitched the ninth to break Kansas City's string of three straight blown saves, after John Parrish (1-0) got an out in the eighth for his first win since June 28, 2008.

Twins 4, White Sox 3, 11 innings

CHICAGO (AP) - J.J. Hardy drove in Joe Mauer with an 11th-inning single and Minnesota beat Chicago for its fourth straight win.

Mauer, pinch hitting for rookie Drew Butera, drew a leadoff walk against Tony Pena (0-1) and was sacrificed to second by Denard Span. Mauer moved to third on Orlando Hudson's lineout to deep center.

Hardy's hit past diving shortstop Alexei Ramirez made a winner of Brian Duensing (1-0), who pitched two scoreless innings. Jon Rauch earned his third save in three chances.

Chicago's John Danks and Minnesota's Francisco Liriano each threw six innings.

Athletics 10, Angels 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Daric Barton and Rajai Davis each had three hits and two RBIs, Cliff Pennington added a three-run homer and Oakland sent Los Angeles to its fourth straight defeat.

Pennington's homer, which gave the Athletics a 10-2 lead, was the 10th allowed by Angels pitchers during their first five games. The three-time defending AL West champs, coming off a 10-1 loss to Minnesota on Thursday, are 1-4 for the first time since 1988.

Gio Gonzalez (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits over six-plus innings in his season debut.

Matt Palmer (0-1) was charged with seven runs - five earned - and eight hits over five-plus innings in a spot start for Scott Kazmir, whose spring training was interrupted because of hamstring and shoulder injuries.
