The federal Environmen-tal Protection Agency has awarded a $400,000 grant to Lyon County to help clean up and revitalize properties including sites contaminated by petroleum products.
The money will be used to assess, clean and redevelop "brownfield" properties by Lyon County and the cities of Fernley and Yerington.
"Lyon County contains many sites that use, store and generate petroleum products," the EPA announcement states. "Lyon County ranked among the worst counties in the nation for waste generation and air emissions."
It also pointed out that Lyon has Nevada's highest unemployment rate, which will be helped by jobs created by the cleanup projects along highways 50 and 95A and State Route 208.
"These investments and jobs target local, under-served and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods - places where environmental cleanups and new jobs are most needed," the announcement states.
The grant is part of a total of nearly $80 million in brownfield grants being issued by EPA nationwide.
