130 YEARS AGO

A young lady from Austin is about to make her debut in Italy at the opera. She is called Mademoiselle Nevada and is expected to be a great success. Madame Porteous, of Virginia City, who also has a remarkable voice, is now studying in London. When called on by a leading music teacher, she was taken aback and astonished when told he could not take her until someone had put her through normal vocal exercise because her last teacher had put her in an exceedingly bad way. It is believed that she will come out all right in the end.

100 YEARS AGO

Emma Goldman, the famous anarchist and lecturer, addressed the people at the Eagle Hall in Reno on the subject of "Free Love." She paid compliments to the divorce colony at Reno and questioned the statement as to the reason women come to Reno to be free. She said they come here so that they can be free of one man to give themselves to another. "No policemen were on guard," reported the Gazette.

70 YEARS AGO

Entitled "Neighbor Nevada," an article in the California publication Motor Land illustrates the scenic views of the Silver State to the 98,000 motoring families in the state. One picture in the publication shows Clear Creek Canyon. Another shows St. Mary's of the Mountains in Virginia City.

50 YEARS AGO

Tomorrow through May 1, a "hole-in-one" contest will be held at Mills Park Golf course with net proceeds going to the Carson High School band uniform fund, director Al Saliman announced.

20 YEARS AGO

Nevada gaming revenues soar 22 percent over the same month last year (1989).
