Forty-seven Cub Scouts and their parents from Carson City Cub Scout Pack 341 traveled to San Francisco April 17 to spend the night in the barracks on the USS Hornet, now a museum at the former naval air station at Alameda.

The scouts got to ride on the Hornet's elevator that moves planes from the hangar deck to the flight deck and received a private tour from Bill Fee, who served on the Hornet during the Vietnam War.

Scout Nick Bowler led the Flag Ceremony on the flight deck after sunrise Sunday morning in front of more than 300 Scouts from around the United States. Bryce Bauer carried the flag. He flew in to be with his pack after recently moving with his parents to Colorado.

The USS Hornet CV-12 was commissioned on Nov. 29, 1943. It inflicted more damage on the enemy in WWII than any other aircraft carrier. USS Hornet also served in the 1950s as an attack carrier and was later deployed three times to Vietnam. The ship's career ended by recovering the Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts.
