Ballroom dances start May 2

A 12-week class in ballroom dance will start up May 2 at the Genoa Town Hall.

Larry Ward, with 55 years experience in dance, will instruct the class for adults and teenagers. Sign-ups will be taken at the first two classes on May 5 and May 16 (no class on Mother's Day May 9).

Cost for each class is $8 adults and $6 teens.

Carson to celebrate Arbor Day

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration at 5:30 p.m. today in the park across from the State Library on the corner of Stewart and Musser streets.

At the celebration, the Shade Tree Council will present the George Washington Ferris Award to the Nevada National Guard, Greenhouse Garden Center, Healthy Trees and the Carson City School District.

In 2009, when the Nevada National Guard began construction of its solar power plant, it relocated 40 trees schools with help from Greenhouse Garden Center, Healthy Trees and the Carson City School District. Julie Roberts from Governor Gibbons' Office will make the presentation on the council's behalf. This marks the first year the council has presented more than one George Washington Ferris Award.

At 6 p.m., the council will plant a Greenspire Linden, which was selected by the staff of State Buildings and Grounds. The tree, which is the council's gift to the people of Nevada, was paid for with funds the Council raised from its annual Fall Tree Care Seminar.

Adopt a Pet Day Saturday at shelter

Carson City Girl Scouts Troop 196 will participate in Adopt a Pet Day 10 a.m.-

2 p.m. Saturday at the Carson City Animal Shelter, 3770 Butti Way.

The Scouts will unveil a new animal shelter sign designed and made by the troop.

Adopt a Pet Day will feature a raffle for all new pet owners, pet care information and more.

Troop 196 will collect donations for the animals, including blankets, towels, rubber pet toys, puppy and kitten food, adult animal food and dog treats.

Bark wine and dine fundraiser at Fuji

Parks 4 Paws will host Bark, Wine and Dine fundraiser 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at Fuji Park Events Building, 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

The event, hosted by Mayor Bob Crowell features an evening of food, drinks, dancing and fun. There will be live music as well as a silent auction.

All proceeds go to Parks 4 Paws. Tickets are $25 per person.

March for Babies Saturday

March of Dimes will hold a March for Babies on Saturday at Mills Park. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the 1.5 mile walk begins at 9 a.m.

"We invite the people from the Carson City area to come out on Saturday and support March for Babies," said Dallas Haun, president and CEO of Nevada State Bank, the top sponsor for March for Babies. Haun will lead the walk Saturday.

The events is a celebration of families, friends and co-workers who have raised money to support March of Dimes research in finding causes for premature births.

Container gardening class in Virginia City

The Comstock Gardeners and Growers, a program of Community Chest, Inc. in Storey County, is holding a spring workshop on container gardening.

The workshop will take place from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Storey County Senior Center.

Join the growers for a breakfast of frittata with farm fresh eggs and locally-grown vegies, fresh baked breads, and fruit compote.

RPEN to meet Tuesday

Retired Public Employees of Nevada will meet at 2 p.m. May 4 at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center on Beverly Drive.

Speakers will be representatives from PERS and PEBP. They will present information on our retirement system and our health insurance.
