A tremendous crowd of brawny Scots came to town yesterday to attend the Caledonian picnic to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Twenty-six carloads came down filled with muscle, beauty and jollity of the Comstock. As soon as the gathering of clans assembled at Treadways, children spread themselves over the place and began attacking the green apples ... (continued Thursday).

110 YEARS AGO

Wm. Borchert of this city has been granted a patent on a Spring Seat for locomotive engineers. The seat has been given a thorough test on the V&T and it is more than likely that the inventor will make money. With this device, more lives will be saved than by accidents.

80 YEARS AGO

One of the most sensational murder trials in Nevada history started in Pioche recently. Joseph A. Morlock and Kenneth Carter, both under 23, go on trial for the murder of Herbert Hulse, who was beaten into unconsciousness in the mountain vastness near Hiko when he came upon Morlock and Carter who were breaking into the mine's safe. They later killed Morlock's father and left him alongside the roadway. Claim jumping and mistreatment is said to be the motive for the murders.

50 YEARS AGO

County Assessor Jack Schumacher reports an increase of 373 car licenses issued thus far this year over 2,380 last year. There was an increase of 106 truck plates, 57 trailer and 10 residence trailer licenses.

20 years ago

An informal rock 'n' roll jam session in Brunswick Canyon turned ugly Sunday when at least three people were assaulted and a number of vehicles damaged.

Plague season has returned as the fatal disease has been found in the Martis Creek Campground in Tahoe-Donner.
