130 YEARS AGO

Caledonian Picnic (continued from Thursday): At the event's target shooting, respective teams competed for the Caedonian trophy with the crack of rifles up and down the line like clockwork. The Sarsfield's were in splendid trim, and nearly every shot on the marker showed up as a "bulls eye." The Sarsfield score of 802 is the largest ever made on the coast.

110 YEARS AGO

The directors of the Agricultural Association have been bothered in recent years at the lack of water for watering the horse race track. The director yesterday placed a steam pump on the well and now it seems the water problem is settled.

80 YEARS AGO

The Department of Commerce announced that there were 1,199 deaths in Nevada in 1929. The principal causes of death were heart disease, 165; pneumonia, 98; tuberculosis, 87; cancer, 80 and nephritis, 72. The largest cause of accidental deaths was auto accidents, 45 and mine accidents, 15. Railroad accidents and accidental falls had 14 deaths each.

50 YEARS AGO

At the Carson Theater: "Crack in the Mirror" with Orson Welles and Juliette Greco. Wednesday through Saturday: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World." At the Sky-Vue Drive-In Theatre: "Anything Goes" plus "Imitation General."

20 YEARS AGO

Lightning storms continued to plague firefighters as crews worked to contain a 136-acre blaze within a mile of the China Spring Youth Camp.

The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department is hoping to put some fuel in its tanks by sponsoring the 26th annual Santa Maria Days in Dayton.
