Father Tormey has returned to the city after a month's sojourn in Marysville. We suspect that Archbishop Monogue ordered Father Tormey to the heated districts of Yuba county to prelate to do penance. The scarcity of clergy in this city for some time past has caused the task of preserving the morals of the community to fall exclusively upon the Appeal and Mr. Hammond. Both feel considerably relieved over the return of theological reinforcements.

Nearly every city in the country is dissatisfied with the census figures. It is claimed by everyone that thousands have been overlooked. The enumerators are now a little anxious on threats from businessmen who say they will take a census at their own expense just to show how worthless is the one made by the government bureau.

The chief engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad has announced the construction of the railroad spur from Las Vegas to the site of the Boulder canyon dam. Headquarters of the construction crew will be Las Vegas.

50 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Berger were guests of honor at a bon voyage party Saturday hosted by the employment security department. At the center of the buffet supper table was a cake made in the form of a steamship before their extended European tour.

The state's top military commander says there is a strong possibility the Nevada Army and Air Guard reserve units will be called to Iraq if the conflict escalates further.

A Carson city woman is grateful for ABC news anchor Peter Jennings. Because of a news article, she found she could adopt a Chinese girl. Through Senator Richard Bryan's office, three women found they could adopt, too, even though they were single.
