Virginia City Civil War Days on Labor Day

Heading to Virginia City is one of my favorite things to do. Going back in time is only a short drive away. Stop by Gold Hill restaurant and say hello to Chef Randy, have a glass of jungle juice at the Old Washoe Club, check out the local cowboys in a shoot out and, coming Labor Day weekend, enjoy Civil War Days. The Pulitzer Prize epic poem, "John Brown's Body" will be presented by a professional theater cast from Southern California, plus there is a Civil War High Tea as well as a parade, Battle Trains, dance and more. One thing about VC there is something for the entire family. Don't forget the Camel Races are coming too.

BORDERS BENEFIT DAYS FOR AUSTIN HOUSE

I can spend hours shopping at the Borders Book Store on Topsy Lane, so this fundraiser will be easy for me. However, if you are short on time but still want to help support Austin's House, they have a promo code to use for online orders too. Austin's House is the only emergency children's shelter in rural Northern Nevada. When a child is removed due to abuse or neglect and there is nowhere to go, Austin's House provides a safe shelter. Since opening in 2007, the shelter has provided a safe haven for 140 children. With your support by purchasing a book or two, they can continue to help keep children in a nurturing home environment.

KERRI OXOBY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT

Spending time with the Oxoby family, Shirley, Lyndi and Jake and seeing Chickie Borda-Oxoby is always a gift. Hanging out with Darlene, Steve, Rick and Ray Oxoby is more than entertaining but most important, remembering Kerri and some great moments of what family is truly about. This is more then a memorial golf tournament, this is a legacy of a strong, amazing Carson family and I would like to see John Corda and crew at the barbeque this year too. This tournament is open to everyone. After golf, the barbecue will be going and there will be music too. Thanks to all involved last year, the scholarship increased in value to $3,000 per student.
