Deputy injured in pursuit, accident

A Carson City deputy sustained a minor injury and two patrol vehicles were damaged when a Dayton man allegedly failed to yield to police and led officers on a low-speed chase that ended when he rammed a police cruiser with a deputy inside.

John Foster, 46, will likely face charges of eluding police, battery with a deadly weapon and destruction of property once he's released from the hospital, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

According to Deputy Eric Clowser, officers were called out to the Carson Nugget on a report of someone threatening people and allegedly hitting a parked car as he left the area.

Clowser said he spotted the suspect vehicle, a red pickup truck, northbound on Stewart Street going

56 mph in a 25 mph zone.

When Clowser attempted to stop the truck, Foster allegedly fled, leading the deputy on a low-speed, winding chase that eventually took them to the area of Winnie Lane and Mountain Street.

At Wagner and Michael drives, the truck nearly hit a parked vehicle, said Clowser.

Clowser said he stopped his patrol vehicle six to 10 feet behind the suspect's vehicle and got out. While he was ordering Foster out of the vehicle, Foster instead allegedly gunned the truck in reverse.

"He turned around, stared at me and just rams my car and gets stuck on the hood of my car," Clowser said.

He said Foster eventually freed his truck from the hood of the patrol vehicle and continued south on Michael Drive to Winnie Lane where Clowser was able to push the truck and cause it to stall just west of Mountain Street.

Deputy Tara Collier arrived on scene and stopped her patrol vehicle in the path of the stalled truck in an attempt to block it in, said Clowser.

"I can hear him restart the truck and he rams Deputy Collier," said Clowser.

The impact deployed both airbags in Collier's patrol car.

She sustained an injury to her hand and was taken the hospital.

Her vehicle was totaled.

"Tara was bumped around. She will probably come out bruised, but she'll be fine," Furlong said.

Clowser said Foster was complaining of neck pain and also was taken to the hospital. Clowser said Foster also appeared to be intoxicated.
