Carson City man arrested in high-speed chase

A Carson City man jailed on a probation violation Sunday allegedly confessed to his involvement in a high-speed chase.

Joseph Kenneth Carter, 26, was booked into the Carson City Jail on suspicion of felony eluding police causing property damage, possession of a stolen vehicle, malicious destruction of property, misdemeanor reckless driving, failure to stop on signal of police and hit and run with property damage.

According to the arrest reports, officers on Sunday checked on a call of a distraught man sitting in his car at an apartment complex on College Parkway.

When police arrived they found Carter in a vehicle with stolen plates. Carter allegedly admitted to using methamphetamine the previous morning and was arrested on a probation violation.

Later that afternoon officers gathered information that implicated Carter in a high-speed chase on Jan. 2.

In that instance, a Carson City deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Carson Meadows at 2:55 a.m. The suspect fled, leading officers through several residential neighborhoods, striking fences along the way and reaching speeds of 70 mph.

At one point, the vehicle was cornered in a storage lot in South Carson Street and rammed a gate to escape, reports state.

The vehicle also struck a patrol car in Indian Hills, causing an estimated $400 damage, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The chase was called off for safety reasons at 3:07 a.m.

When questioned at the jail on Sunday, Carter allegedly admitted he had stolen the vehicle involved in the chase. He later left it on a dirt road off Johnson Lane and fled on foot, the arrest report states.

Carter is being held on $25,000 bail.
