130 YEARS AGO

The Nevada Transcript newspaper gave a review of an amateur presentation the other day. They said: "The amateurs were at their worst, and that is saying a good deal." This is a terrible exhibition of nerve on behalf of the Transcript. No other paper on the west coast had dared to do such a reckless thing. The Appeal, which has walked where angels fear to tread, never had the gaul to do such a thing.

100 YEARS AGO

Word comes to the Appeal asking we send fire apparatus to Genoa, where the entire town is faced with destruction. An engine from the Warren Engine Company is being readied with a thousand feet of hose. Fifty volunteer firefighters are to load the engine on the V&T for transport near the town. Later it was learned that the courthouse was gutted and water had run out. The fire is under control, however.

70 YEARS AGO

The Maginot Line came to be known as greatly overestimated. It is hoped that the Rock of Gibraltar will retain its ancient meaning.

50 YEARS AGO

Five of 10 prospective jurors were excused today in the extortion trial of vice figure Joe Conforte in District Court. Conforte, who has been a bawdy house operator, has been accused of extortion by threat. Conforte was indicted by a Grand Jury after Washoe County District Attor-ney William Raggio accused him of arranging a sex trap so Raggio would dismiss pending vagrancy charges.

20 YEARS AGO
