Speaker, patriotic celebration planned

Carson City Natives and Newcomers will meet at 11:30 a.m. today at the Carson Nugget.

Special speaker will be Florence Phillips from the "English as a Second Lan-guage" program. A patriotic celebration also is planned.

Color guard needs new members

Carson High School Color Guard practice has started up on the high school football field.

The group's numbers are small, so they are looking for additional high school students to audition.

Color Guard performs with the Blue Thunder Marching Band at football games and marching band competitions.

Auditions are held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings on the football field.

Brownfields properties to be identified

The Carson City Brownfields Grant Program Workplan will be presented to the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee at 5:30 p.m. July 20 in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Brownfields are real property where the expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant, according to the Environ-mental Protection Agency.

At the kick-off meeting, the EPA Brownfields Grant Program and the locally retained consultants: Geocon Consultants, Inc. and Resource Concepts, Inc. will be introduced. The meeting also will include an introduction to the potential project areas within Carson City.

The Brownfields Grant will allow Carson City to work with property owners to investigate potential contamination that complicates redevelopment.

Antique show in Minden

The biannual Antiques Show & Sale is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday in the historic COD Garage on Esmeralda Avenue in downtown Minden.

Dealers from Nevada and California have furniture, textiles, sun-purpled glass, comic books, baseball cards, jewelry, prints, country antiques, clocks, lamps, trunks, yard art, glass and china on display and for sale.

The show features an appraisal clinic where family treasures may be appraised for $5 per item with no limit of items. Appraisals of large items can be done from good photographs.

CTRHA sponsoring golf tournament

A Moonlight on the Greens golf tournament sponsored by the Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary will be July 23 at Silver Oak Golf Course.

Registration begins at 5 p.m. with cocktails and dinner at 6 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 7 p.m.

Cost is $75 per person and includes green fees and cart, nighttime glow balls, range balls, dinner, two cocktails, putting contest, on-course contests and prizes. Dinner only is $15.

Poker run to benefit foundation

The Josh Farler Helping Hands Foundation will host its second annual poker run July 17.

Sign-ups are at 9 a.m. in Yerington at Casino West and the ride begins at 10 a.m. Registration is $35 for one or $45 per couple with one bike.

The Josh Farler Helping Hands Foundation provides cancer support services out of Mason Valley.
