The City Cafe Bakery near downtown Carson City has a new addition and some more changes coming down the road.

On Tuesday, the cafe welcomed a local pastry business to begin selling their goods inside the store.

The Shirini Shop, owned and operated by husband and wife Ali Arbabha, 31, and Leila Tauakoli, 33, serves Middle Eastern-style pastries - including baklava and gluten-free walnut cookies - as well as pistachio ice cream and cakes. They hope to eventually serve Mediterranean dishes, too.

The couple started their pastry business after Arbabha lost his civil engineering job in Reno.

"In November I got laid off because of the economy," he said. "I had to do something. I couldn't stay on my unemployment insurance."

Today the couple is preparing pastries for birthdays and weddings and selling their goods in other local restaurants besides City Cafe Bakery, which has been for sale for three months.

City Cafe Bakery owner Roberta Rosario said she decided to sell the business for personal reasons. She said there has been some interest in purchasing the business.

"We compliment each other," Rosario said of the new pastry shop.
