Officials confirmed Thursday that a Carson City principal arrested in Reno on a drunken driving charge was also jailed on suspicion of possessing marijuana.
Carson Middle School Principal Sam Santillo, 45, is charged in Reno Justice Court with drunken driving, possession of marijuana, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and speeding in relation to a May 28 traffic stop on Highway 395 in North Reno.
According to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Matt Kaplan, Santillo was stopped for allegedly driving 68 mph in a 55 mph construction zone.
During the stop, the trooper allegedly noticed signs of intoxication, and Santillo was arrested after failing a field sobriety test, said Kaplan.
A blood draw was taken at the jail to determine Santillo's level of intoxication, Kaplan said. The results have not been released yet.
During a search of the vehicle prior to towing, the trooper also found an open container of alcohol and less than an ounce of marijuana, according to Kaplan.
Santillo was booked into the Washoe County Jail about
9 p.m. May 28 and was released about 4 a.m. the following morning after posting $1,772 bail.
A pre-trial hearing is set for today in Reno Justice Court.
Santillo did not return a call for comment Thursday.
