130 YEARS AGO

A Dog's Sagacity: Jim Cheeley's dog was strolling about the Capitol grounds quite thirsty. He went to one of the hydrants, turned on the water and rushed to the end of the hose and drank. He ran off and left the water running. "Abe," our Appeal dog, would have turned the water off.

Society notes: Governor and Mrs. Kinkead are expected to return the early part of the month. The summer exodus from Carson to the Lake, Hope Valley and other places of resort and pleasure have commenced in dead earnest.

120 YEARS AGO

Lively lightning: At Sprague's ranch near Sheridan there was heavy rain accompanied by lightning. There came a flush of lightning that struck a band of horses and felled a dozen to the ground, the same flash demolishing mowing and reaping machines ... bolts and nuts wrenched off and a plowshare left in half-fused condition.

Bob Hope plans to leave for another American Red Cross benefit tour.

Nixon: Betting odds are 7-5 in favor of Vice President Nixon being elected president over Democratic nominee Sen. John F. Kennedy.

Acorn fire: Victims of the fire that wiped out more than 6,000 acres of forest, destroying 26 homes, filed a claim against federal firefighting agencies.
