130 YEARS AGO

A Young Barnum: There is a young man named Lynch living near the depot who has aspirations of becoming a sort of Barnum. Over time he has collected a number of curiosities and has them in the cellar. He now has some three hundred bottles, vials and jars. His jack-knife collection embraces some 50 varieties. With everything else, he has collected some 10,000 pieces over three years. One day we think Lynch will become a sage brush Barnum, exhibiting his curiosities to open mouthed multitudes.

100 YEARS AGO

J.C. Jones of Loyalton must serve fourteen years at San Quentin for killing George King of Beckwith with a baseball bat last August. The death occurred as the result of a baseball game between the two towns. Jones led the Loyalton rooters at the game, according to evidence when a Beckwith participant remonstrated with him for using an ax handle in cheering at the side lines. King interceded with Jones returning with a baseball bat.

70 YEARS AGO

The latest figures released by Frank W. Ingram, supervisor of the census for Nevada, credits Ormsby county with the population total of 3,206. The population of the state is now placed at 110,014, compared with 91,058 in 1930.

50 YEARS AGO

20 YEARS AGO

The name "Mormon cricket" is really a misnomer. The insect is really a large, black, long-horned, wingless grasshopper. Real crickets have wings and chirp. The current name was given to them during an infestation in the Salt Lake Valley in 1848.
