IRS: 19,000 Nevadans have unclaimed tax refunds

RENO (AP) - The Internal Revenue Service says more than 19,000 Nevada taxpayers have more than $19 million in unclaimed refunds.

The refunds are for people who didn't file a return for the 2006 tax year.

IRS spokesman Raphael Tulino says many people don't file a tax return because they don't meet the income threshold or aren't required to. But, he says, they may have had income withheld from a part-time job or been eligible for the earned income credit.

The IRS doesn't send out notices to people who are owed a refund. It's up to taxpayers to file a return so they can figure out if one is due.

Taxpayers have three years to claim their refunds before the money is given to the U.S. Treasury Department.
