Calling all Carsonites: Easter egg dyers needed

The Carson City Kiwanis has put out the call: HELP!

There are 6,000 plastic eggs still needing to be stuffed with candy and 5,000 raw eggs waiting to be boiled and dyed, but only about 15 people so far have volunteered to help, said organizer Bobby Bean.

"We're having a little trouble with volunteers," he said Thursday, just three days before the parking lot of American Family Insurance will turn into an egg processing line.

Four years ago, the Kiwanis Club took over the community Easter Egg Hunt that began 33 years ago.

In recent years, the popular event switched to the Saturday preceding Easter Sunday because there was always a problem finding volunteers to work on the holiday.

But with the date fast approaching, Bean is desperate for help.

"We need about 40 or 50 people," he said.

The dying event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Bean's insurance office at 1621 Highway 50 East and could go until 1 p.m. Then on April 3, more volunteers are needed to put out the 15,000 eggs and to direct the hunters to their age-appropriate field at Centennial Park.

Bean said this will be the second year the Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Centennial Park because crews are better able to control the hoards of parents, who in years past have been known to trample some of the smaller children in a quest to help their children collect a bounty.

To volunteer to help the free hunt, call American Family Insurance at 885-9542 or just show up Saturday morning at the office, said Bean.

"If we got 60 or 70 people out there, it would be OK, too," he said. "There's plenty for people to do."
