Obituary: Josephine Talas

Josephine Talas, 78, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother entered into eternal lie on Friday, March 26, 2010. Josephine was born August 24, 1931, in Sulphur, Okla., to Joseph Gibson Jr. and Selena Harjo Gibson. She was an enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald Talas Sr., brothers James "Okie" Gibson and Lee Franklin Gibson.

Josephine graduated high school at Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan., in 1951. After graduation from vocational training in 1953 she began working at the Pierre Indian Boarding School, in Pierre, S.D., as a matron attendant. In 1956 she was transferred to the Stewart Indian Boarding School in Carson City where she met and married Donald Talas Sr. Josephine began work for the Nevada State Occupational Safety and Heath Administration in 1969 as a clerk typist I. She remained with the state, retiring in April 1997 from vocational rehabilitation.

Josephine enjoyed many activities in her spare time including bowling, pool, and attending her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's sporting events, softball, basketball, bowling, soccer, and BMX bike racing. She would attend as many events as possible, whether in the hot summer sun or sitting in a gym all day. She also loved to travel and especially looked forward to her visits to Oklahoma to visit family and fiends.

Josephine was proud of her involvement in Carson Bobby Sox in the early 70s. She was one of the founding members of Carson Bobby Sox, coaching and managing her daughters' teams including the all-star teams. Josephine is survived by her sister Anna Mae Gibson of Tecumseh, Okla.; daughters Debra Doka (Frederick) of Carmichael, Calif., Karen Talas (Duane Dunn) of Nixon, Nev., Terry Boice (Rocky Sr.) and Pamela Talas of Carson City; son Donald Talas Jr.; stepson Dennis Talas (Kathy) of Carson City; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Fitzhenry's Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Fitzhenry's Funeral Home. We invite you to send a condolence message to the family. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
