Census workers knocking on doors

(AP) - Census workers will be out knocking on doors this weekend across Nevada, trying to get an accurate count of the state's population.

Secretary of State Ross Miller says while most households received census questionnaires in the mail, people who didn't return them or didn't receive one will be visited in person.

Those workers, called enumerators, will be knocking on doors through June.

The census is taken every 10 years and is used by the federal government to allocate more than $400 billion to state and local governments every year.

Nevada receives about $917 annually for every person counted.

Miller adds that census workers will never ask for a Social Security number, bank or credit cards. He urges residents contacted in person to ask to see a census worker's identification.
