Carson baseball squad finishes strong with sweep of Vikings

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - South Tahoe High had one of its largest offensive outputs of the season on Friday against Carson, but it wasn't nearly enough to earn a Sierra League baseball victory.

The Senators denied the Vikings from winning a league contest with a 20-10 victory, finishing a three-game sweep at Todd Fields.

"We've improved game by game, which is what we're looking for," said Carson coach Cody Farnworth. "Not quite the year we were hoping for, but we got something to grow on that we're going to take with us and try to get better."

Eight Vikings' errors, including two pivotal miscues in the fifth inning, undermined any chance at a South Tahoe comeback.

The Vikings rallied for three runs in the fourth to pull within 10-7, but a two-out infield erro enabled Carson to load the bases in the top of the fifth. Junior relief pitcher Jamie Yelles should have escaped the inning without any damage, but Colby Blueberg's fly ball in right field was dropped, clearing the bases for a 13-7 Carson lead.

"We were a little worried," Farnworth said. "(Don Amaral's) got them playing hard, and he's doing a good job with them."

Chance Quilling and David Charles followed with RBI singles to put the Senators firmly ahead, 15-7.

With South Tahoe threatening to produce a big inning most of the afternoon, Carson didn't waste its final at-bat. Blueberg belted a run-scoring double to dead center field, Brock Pradere singled in a run and Dylan Sawyers capped the Senators' offensive fireworks with a two-run homer to left-center field.

"It had more to do with that I thought I was going to end my season with a strikeout, and I got another chance, so I took advantage of it," Sawyers said.

Carson won its final four league games to finish at 8-10 and 11-16 overall, while the Vikings concluded league play at 0-18.

YERINGTON SWEEPS DAYTON

YERINGTON - The Lions avenged Wednesday's one-run loss by sweeping Dayton, 7-3 and 4-3, Friday night in Northern 3A baseball action.

In the opener, Cole Aiazzi scattered seven hits to pick up the win. A Michael Garner double and two Dayton errors led to a five-run second inning for the Lions, who wiped out a 1-0 deficit. Jake Koch led the Dust Devils with two hits.

In the nightcap, the teams were deadlocked at 3 after seven innings. Yerington's Curtis Stubblefield was hit by a pitch, stole second and eventually scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Kenny Skalla led Yerington with two hits, while Forrest Burrows, Houston Berntsen and Garling all hasd wo hits in the losing effort.

CARSON RIPS VIKINGS

Luke Maher and Bruce McIntosh combined for six hits, two homers and nine RBIs to lead Carson to a 19-11 win over South Tahoe Friday at Ron McNutt Field.

McIntosh went 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBIs, while Maher went 3-for-4 with a double, homer and four RBIs.

Logan Krupp also contributed three hits, while Tom Champion, Carter Knuckolls, Rafe King and Casey Wolfe all added two hits. Krupp, Knuckolls and Wolfe all drove in two runs.

JV SOFTBALL

SENATORS SWEEP VIKES

Carson finished its season with a three-game sweep of South Tahoe this week, winning 20-6, 18-1 and 14-1.

In Thursday's opener, Christa McGahuey collected four hits, drove in two runs and fanned 10 while throwing hitless relief. In the first game of Friday's doubleheader, Erica Watson threw a three-hitter and fanned seven, while Sara Wood led the offense with four runs, two hits and three RBIs. Maria Arcadia also drove in three runs. In Friday's second game, Watson pitched another three-hitter and fanned eight, while Arcadia drove in two runs.
