The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
Silver dollar: To the early-bird farmer's market that started Saturday in the Carson Station parking lot. After a long, wet winter, we are more than ready for the summery sensation of fresh and delicious local produce, even if "local" means the strawberries drove over the hill from California.
This early taste of summer is very welcome, and kudos to Linda Marrone and the others who arranged it. The market will run
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through June 12.
Silver dollar: To the Kassity Family School Fund, for working to raise money for local schools through sales at the Kassitys' McDonald's restaurants.
The latest fundraiser earned more than $3,500 for local schools in Carson City, Douglas County and other Northern Nevada communities. Another one is planned for May 18.
Silver dollar: To the mail carriers whose canned food drive raised much-needed supplies for FISH Saturday, and all those who contributed. Local charities say the need is greater than ever, and this was a convenient (for the donors, at least) way to restock the larder. Thanks to all who contributed.
Wooden nickel: To the closing of Sak 'N Save, another victim of the economy. Any time a grocery store closes, the neighbors within walking distance lose a real community resource. We're sorry to see it go.
