LAS VEGAS - A 46-year-old ex-felon was sentenced to 18 to 45 years in a Nevada prison for killing a man and stealing his truck more than five years ago.

John Bernard Hemmers apologized and admitted Monday he killed 38-year-old Anthony Wayne Henton. He said he was drunk and made "a horrible mistake."

Hemmers pleaded guilty in February before to a reduced charge of second-degree murder and felony robbery with a deadly weapon. He avoided a death penalty trial.

Henton's body was found Nov. 11, 2004, off Needles Highway south of Laughlin. He had been shot in the back of his head.

Helton had been dating Hemmers' sister, and police say Hemmers stole Helton's 2003 Ford F-350 pickup after the slaying.

Hemmers was arrested in July 2005 in Somerton, Ariz.
