Nevada average gas prices increased by four cents from April to May, now at an average of $3 a gallon, AAA reported Tuesday.
That's 77 cents more expensive than a year ago and 10 cents higher than the current national average of $2.90 per gallon.
May's average gas prices also rose in Carson City by a penny, now at an average $2.96 per gallon. Gas prices rose by three cents in Reno to $3.06 per gallon and two cents to $3.06 in Sparks.
"While gas prices in Nevada are nearly 80 cents higher than they were a year ago, there has been a virtual lid on prices at the pump this spring, said Michael Geeser, spokesperson for AAA Nevada. "Demand has remained low and the relative weakness of the euro compared to the dollar has kept oil prices from shooting up."
Nevada has the eighth highest gas prices in the continental United States. California has the highest at $3.06 per gallon.
The least expensive gas in the country is in Springfield, Mo., at $2.64 per gallon, while the most expensive in the lower 48 is in Eureka, Calif., at $3.29.
The highest recorded gas price in Nevada was $4.26 in June 2008.
