Obituary: Peggy Etchemendy

Peggy Etchemendy, 84, a longtime Nevada resident, went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2010. Peggy was born on January 3, 1926, to Willard and Ruby Hurst on a cattle ranch in the northern Texas Panhandle. Peggy was a child of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, growing up in Colorado and Wyoming before moving to Elko in the early 1940s where she met and married Henry (Hank) Etchemendy on June 2, 1948.

As a young mother, Peggy was active in teaching Sunday School, Cub Scouts and Little League. Later she was an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Assistance League of Reno/Sparks, Bible Study Fellowship and the Desert Gardener's Club.

With her many attributes, Peggy was an expert seamstress. For many years she served as a judge for the "Make It Yourself with Wool Contest" and 4-H Club sewing at the Nevada State Fair in Reno. Due to her failing health and eyesight, she was unable to carry out these volunteer duties in 2009.

Peggy was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband of 52 years Hank and daughter-in-law Cindy of Taos, N.M. She is survived by her three sons, Larry of Reno, Bill of Taos and Arnold (Kathy) of Sparks; her older brother HB Hurst (Birdie) of Boulder City, Colo., and younger sister Billie Brinkman of Carson City; three grandchildren, Brandon (Jamie) of Reno, Cory (Fiancee Taylor) of Taos and Erin of Issaquah, Wash.; one great-grandson Tate of Reno.

A memorial service celebrating Peggy's life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at St. Johns Presbyterian Church of Reno. In lieu of flowers, Peggy requested donations be made to The Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Inurnment will be in Elko at a future date.
