All sorts: The grasshoppers of Sierra Valley are packing their valises for Reno. John Rosser has a horse that will drink a gallon of beer without taking a breathe.

120 YEARS AGO

The mansion dance: Fifty or sixty couples gathered at the old Bowers Mansion to trip the light fantastic in the confines of the old home, where wealth and plenty knew no bounds. A supper was served and the Queen of gayety [sic] held supreme until two in the morning. The tired guests departed leaving the house in the same weird stillness with the cold wind whistling through the open windows and the empty rooms.

70 YEARS AGO

50 YEARS AGO

Brownies of troop 152 under the direction of Mrs. Don Morris and Mrs. Don Young entertained mothers at a May meeting. The following girls made pillow cases, bottle cap pins and yarn octopus - Charlene Baker, Patty Doherty, Judith Kecker, Colleen Inmor, Sheila Laxalt, Sharla Marriage, Carol Millard, Patty Morris, Vickie Perondi, Dorothy Rink and Theresa Young. At the last meeting they hiked up "C" hill.

20 YEARS AGO

Photo caption: Supporters of the military watchdog group Citizen Alert gathered at the Governor's Mansion to celebrate the organization's 15th birthday. Since 1975, the group has been involved in the fight against nuclear waste dumps in Nevada. Raymond Yowell, chief of the Western Shoshone National Council, spoke about support of native land rights.

10 YEARS AGO

The Carson City Nevada Appeal celebrates 135 years. The first issue came off the press May 16, 1865. The longest continuously running paper in the state.

• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
