Bert Jr. Smith was born August 1, 1925, the fifth child of 13 children of Samuel and Beulah (Apple) Smith at Arnett, Okla. He passed from this life on Nov. 12, 2010 at home at the age of 85.
Survivors include his wife Mary Lou of Carson City; son Stan and wife Sally; daughter Debra and husband Mark Olsen, Reno; brothers and sisters Lottie Monroe and Jack, Carson City, Hershel and Danny, Oregon City, Ore., Sonny and Steve, Moses Lake, Wash., and Donna and Jim Mann, Seattle; stepson Greg Fitch and wife Lorraine of Minden; stepdaughter Debra Kneidl of Las Vegas; grandchildren Kay Lessenger, Medford, Ore., Kelly Lange, Oregon, and David Olsen, Reno; and several great-grandchildren.
Bert was a prisoner of war and wounded when he served in Germany during World War II in the U.S. Army.
Memorial services will be held at the Quail Run Clubhouse, 1160 Gambrel at 10 a.m. on Nov. 19, with a Celebration of Life and light brunch to follow.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of final arrangements.
