Mountain elephants: Three elephants that belonged to Cole's circus escaped and took to the woods ... now roaming about in the Sierras. We hope that the elephants will succeed in escaping and proceed to breed. The grizzlies in that section are getting so that they hardly afford sport for the hunter and the blood-thirsty nimrod signs for bigger game. A herd of elephants will fill the bill.

Gillis' Excitement in Placerville, Part III: He hastened to Placerville and took out the necessary location papers. He took no pains to conceal his good luck and all the old topers in Placerville were in a state of excitement. "Whisky'll be cheaper 'n water..." Gillis went so far as to take contracts to furnish saloons with his spring whiskey at $10 a barrel. (continued on Friday)
