PREP ROUNDUP: Carson boys improve to 6-0 in Sierra League soccer

RENO - Carson High's boys soccer team made it six straight with a 4-1 win over Wooster in a Sierra League soccer match Wednesday afternoon.

Carson is 6-0 and tied for first place. Carson returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Bishop Manogue, which lost to Douglas on Wednesday.

"Hopefully it (the Manogiue game) will be a good game," said Carson coach Eric Masters. "Hopefully we come out to play and compete.

"It's not like we played atrocious (against Wooster). We had a couple of opportunities to score and we did. They made a mistake and we capitalized. They were very competitive."

A ballhandling mistake by Wooster led to Carson's first score in the 28th minute. The ball was passed backl, and a Wooster defender tripped. Jason Martin got to the ball and beat the Wooster keeper.

Approximately 34 minutes later, Gustavo Gonzalez sent a pass to Christian Hernandez, who scored the first of his two goals.

Wooster scored in the 70th minute to close to 2-1, but Carson scored two goals in extra time to carve out a more comfortable win. In the 82nd minute, Hernandez was dragged down in the penalty box area, and Gonzales converted the kick. Two minutes later, Gonzalez played a ball to Hernandez, who was able to finish.

Zach Smith and Johnny Lopez played well defensively.

• In JV action, Carson grabbed a 4-1 win behind the hat trick and one assist effort of Francisco Barrios.

Robert Abundis added a goal and assist for the Senators, who are 5-0-1.

Carson led 1-0 a the half on a goal in the 22nd minute by Barrios. Barrios scored again in the 61st minute to make it 2-1. Abundis scored his only goal in the 67th minute and then Barrios completed the scoring with a penalty kick in the 78th minute.

Coach Joe Briggs singled out Christian Navarro, Nathan King and Danny Alonso for outstanding defense.

Carson plays Saturday at 9 a.m.

DOUGLAS BOYS BLANK MINERS

RENO - The Douglas boys' soccer team breathed new life into its season with a 2-0

win over Manogue.

It was the Tigers' first win of the year. At 1-5, Douglas is one game out of the fourth playoff spot.

"You could see afterward that they felt like a monkey was off their backs a

little bit," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "The kids have been working

hard and trying hard and it was good to see them get a win under their

belts.

"It's a topsy-turvy year. It looks like the High Desert League is stronger

on the whole this year, so we are not out of it by any means. We just need

to keep working and hopefully pick up a couple points against some of the

tougher teams on our side."

Vasquez retooled his entire lineup after last Friday loss to McQueen and got

nearly instant results.

It was Edgar Hernandez, who'd been called up from junior varsity earlier in

the week, who fed an assist to Daniel Calderon for the first goal of the

game with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

"The first part of the game was a bit of a struggle getting adjusted, but

after that I felt we really dominated," Vasquez said.

Luis Sillas and Jake Passas moved up top, where Vasquez said they were able

to create more chances than what the team had been seeing. Justin Draper also moved to the outside, where his speed helped the Tiger

offense open things up.

"We really controlled the ball and the tempo of the game," Vasquez said.

"Our defense looked good too and didn't allow any serious shots."

Douglas got its second goal in the second half when pressure forced the

Manogue keeper to force a ball up the middle. Troy Cohee collected it 35 yards away from the net and blasted it into the open net for the goal.

Goalie Francisco Sanchez posted his first career shutout and Scott Chandler,

who moved to sweeper this week, was a defensive force, as was Eric Kleiner.

CROSS COUNTRY

CARSON BOYS, GIRLS WIN

RENO - Carson High's boys and girls varsity cross country squad tuned up for Saturday's Stanford Invitational by defeating Galena.

The boys won 20-40, while the girls triumphed 18-43.

April Shonnard finished first in 21 minutes 52 seconds, while Alex Drozdoff was third in 22:13. Cindy Juchtzer was sixth in 23:34 and Amanda Gordon was seventh in 23:44. Erika Sosa was 10th in 24:20.

Logan Philippi was second to Chris Bolt, clocking a 19:47. Brent Moyle was third in 20:06, Taylor Bradshaw was fourth in 20:25, Brandon Buonacorsi took fifth in 20:26 with Nick Greene placing eighth in 20:30.

"We ran hard," Carson coach Pete Sinnott said. "it was a good training run for the Stanford meet."
