Manogue spikes Carson in 3

Carson High's volleyball team saw its two-match win streak snapped by Bishop Manogue, 20-25, 23-25 and 17-25 Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Manogue won the JV match 25-23 and 25-18 as well as the freshman match, 25-23 and 25-21.

Bishop Manogue improved to 6-1, one game behind Douglas. Carson droped to 4-3 in league.

Carson coach Justin Malley was disappointed that his team was unable to hold leads in each of the first two games.

In Game 1, Carson led 19-16 only to see Manogue scored nine of the next 10 points to win. In Game 2, Carson led 18-14 but was outscored 11-5 down the stretch.

"They (Manogue) played like they were the experienced team, and really they're very young," Malley said of the first two games. "Manogue didn't make a lot of errors. They were very composed."

In the third game, Carson took an early 5-3 lead on aces by Christa McGahuey and Jeanette Van Sickle, and kills by AVan Sickle and Angele Augusta.

Manogue scored six of the next nine for a 9-6 lead, taking advantage of several Carson hitting mistakes. Tisha Ferraro had the only kill for te Miners in that span. Carson tied the match at 9 thanks to two kills by Elysse Virden.

The Miners took the lead for good, scoring six of the next seven points for a 15-10 advantage. Zoe Clavel-Head had two kills and a block in the surge, while setter Kelly Lujan had a kill.

A kill by Sarah Fincher and a an ace by Colleen Pierce extended the Miners' lead to 20-13. Carson made one last run, cutting the lead to 20-16 on kills by Sarah Lushina and McGahuey, but the Miners countered back with four of the next five points for the sweep.

Van Sickle had six kills, five digs, five blocks and two aces, while Lushina had eight kills and 12 digs. Augusta finished with four kills and 12 digs, while Virden had five kills plus three blocks. Courtney Hack had 13 assists and Elizabeth Bennett-Doran added 12.

Head led Manogue with 12 kills and Fincher added nine.
