SENATOR SQUARE: CHS students rake in awards

Congratulations to Carson High Health Occupations Students of America who competed at their State Leadership Conference in Las Vegas last week.

Of the 28 members who attended the conference, 19 members placed in the top five in their event with 16 qualifying for nationals in Anaheim, Calif., in June.

Briana Neben and Kelsey Ricketts won gold in their events. Carson High School is in its first year of the Health Occupations Program and was recognized for two chapter awards: a bronze in Outstanding HOSA Chapter and a gold in National Service Project (raising the most money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

There will be an eighth-grade orientation at the Carson High School 6 p.m. April 11 in the big gym. Parents and students are welcome to attend.

Every year, www.scenic

nevada.org hosts a statewide photo contest on beauty and blight within our state.

Out of more than 900 entries from schools all across the state, and a total of eight possible prizes, Carson High School students won four of the eight cash prizes.

Winners in the beauty category were: Cheyenne Kiser, first place for $100; and Dallana Medina, third place for $25.

Winners in the blight category were: Tim Grunert, second place for $50; and Elena Charles, third place for $25.

In the video class, four students (Curtis Devore, Andrew Peckham, Mark Lacey, and Zachary Leonard) entered the Prevent All Crashes Everyday Campaign (PACE) with a PSA on driver awareness.

It was a statewide contest also. They won third place and the four of them get an all-expenses paid trip to Disneyland.

Ms. Spotts will be leading a tour group abroad during the summer of 2012. Students and parents will explore England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Paris from June 18 to July 5 on an educational tour.

This week's senior spotlight is on Kalie Parmenter.

Kalie has a grade-point average of 4.3 and is enrolled in advanced-placement courses in literature and government, honors chemistry and health occupations.

In addition, Kalie is a member of Health Occupations Students of America and recently qualified to represent Nevada at the HOSA National Leadership Conference.

Kalie is a candy striper at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in the Labor and Delivery Ward and plans to pursue a degree in nursing at UNR.

We are proud of the contributions Kalie has made to Carson High School and our community.

Carson High School needs community volunteers to judge senior projects. A requirement of all senior English classes is to complete a senior project.

We would like to invite you to evaluate the student portfolios and presentations. This project requires that each student research an area of interest, produce a related project, compile a portfolio, and present his/her product to a panel of judges.
