130 YEARS AGO

In the census reports of 1860 it is noted the capture and burning of Dry Creek mail station, on the Overland Stage about thirty miles east of Austin. It was further noted the date was May 1860 and two men were killed were John Applegate, 22, and Ralph M. Lozler, 24 years. To this Henry Butterfield adds that Silas McCanlis and W.L. Bail were also at the station (continued Wednesday).

100 YEARS AGO

Two miners were blown to death last Friday in Wild Horse Canyon while taking measures to place the explosive in a safe location. The two men, John C. Howard and John Lynch, had been working a mine owned by Zeb Johnson of Honey Lake Valley. They were removing the dynamite from a wheelbarrow when the explosion took place.

70 YEARS AGO

Three Carson City boys won bouts in the Reno Golden Gloves tournament. Ernie Rabe took a close decision over Wallace Meachem of Ely. Sharon Wasson made a good showing in defeating Ledo Bounamici of Dayton. Leslie Jake outclassed Billy Barnett of Reno.

50 YEARS AGO

Sheriff Howard Hoffman fired another volley of "shots" against the City Council after a new city employee was given a $35 higher starting salary than other city workers. The city action was taken when the new city dog catcher was paid $425 per month compared to $390 for other workers. Irate citizens and city employees are being taken to the Ormsby Grand Jury.

20 YEARS AGO

Legal secretaries to fire prevention inspectors were added to the growing wish list of serious additions to city staff during budget hearings.

10 YEARS AGO

The owner of the St. Charles Hotel has again put the restored historic landmark on the market. "I am not going to sell it to someone who is going to strip it or take advantage of it," said owner Bob McFadden.
