Since opening in east Carson City in November, NV Recycling has been dedicated to keeping material out of the landfill and maintaining a green footprint, according to the company's asset manager.

"The lion's share of our work is with companies, but we also are here to help individuals who call," said John Creighton.

"We are a recycling collection point for e-waste, paper, plastic and metal. We follow the tenets of responsible recycling and provide an invaluable service to Northern Nevada businesses and individuals," he said.

According to the company website, "NV Recycling specializes in IT asset disposal, computer repair, resale and light metal recycling. Our mission is to educate customers on why it is important to reuse and recycle electronics' items and what options are available for the safe reuse and recycling of these products."

The company offers various services for businesses and individuals including disposal, plastic recycling, hard-drive data destruction and scrap metal recycling. It also offers IT asset management services such as quick evaluations, on-site pickup, on-site removal, inventory assistance, data destruction, disposal and recycling following Environmental Protection Agency standards.

"Additionally, we have a computer store on-site which sells used computers at discounted pricing. We also hold the distinction of being a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher, which means all computers sold have a legal and valid operating system installed," Creighton said.

"Our main focus is on electronics, paper, plastic and metal, and we work with companies to reuse items we take in if there is some value to them," he said. "And we offer consulting to help companies with their internal recycling efforts, just because it's the right thing to do."

Michael Ball, executive director of the Carson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Highway 50 East, said NV Recycling recently helped his operation.

"They've helped us keep stuff out of the landfill as we try to stay up with the times in our industry," Ball said. "We have old wheelchairs and air mattresses that we can't put in the regular trash, and they can recycle those things while putting people to work, so it's a win-win."

NV Recycling holds the proper EPA license, so it's fully compliant with standards, and 11 employees work in various capacities including in the 20,000-square-foot warehouse.

People can bring in their Category 1 plastic, such as clear soda and water bottles, as well as aluminum cans. Bottles sell for 10 cents a pound and cans for 40 cents per pound.

"Those prices can fluctuate, and I monitor the world market daily," he said. "One person just brought in some plastic and made a whopping $8.20 - and they did it the right way."

Creighton said he is particularly proud of the company's on-site computer store.

"We sell computers at a pretty good price, and we're a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher, so we install Windows and do repair work, like removing viruses," he said.

NV Recycling is a drop-off site serving Northern Nevada. It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 6373 Highway 50 East.

Creighton said he is pleased that his company is in such a central location.

"We're especially glad to be here in Carson City, which embraces a green culture," he said.
