(AP) - About half of new Nevada voters who registered in December shunned the major political parties.

The secretary of state's office says of the additional 1,161 active voters who registered during the month, 588 registered as non-partisan, 293 as Democrats and 47 as Republicans.

The remainder registered with minor parties.

Secretary of State Ross Miller says there are 84,691 fewer total active voters in December than there were in the same month following the 2008 general election.
