RENO (AP) - Candidates interested in filling the unexpired term of retiring state Sen. Bill Raggio have until 5 p.m. Friday to apply.

Washoe County commissioners on Tuesday said they will then hold public interviews and make an appointment Jan. 18.

The 84-year-old Republican is the longest serving senator in Nevada history, having been first elected to the seat in 1972. The 2011 Legislature convenes Feb. 7.

Some who have announced interest in the seat include former state Treasurer Patty Cafferata; former Reno Councilwoman Toni Harsh; former Washoe County Commissioner Jim Galloway; and former school board member Kevin Christensen.

Reno businessman Steve Weber also said he would seek the appointment. His wife, Bonnie Weber, is vice chairwoman of the Washoe commission.
