LAS VEGAS (AP) - Hundreds of Nevadans gathered at town hall meetings in Las Vegas and Reno to protest proposed cuts in Gov. Brian Sandoval's budget that could hurt services for the poor, K-12 and higher education.
The Las Vegas Sun says an estimated 800 people attended meetings with lawmakers Saturday in southern Nevada. Another 500 attended meetings in Reno.
A majority of speakers called for tax increases to offset cuts.
Some speakers and demonstrators in Las Vegas praised Sandoval for following through on a pledge to balance the budget without raising taxes.
Sandoval has said the state must close a $2.2 billion budget gap to fund services at existing levels. His budget calls for a 9 percent cut to K-12 education and a 17.66 percent cut for higher education.
